Archaeological Investigations in Vadnagar

Vadnagar is archaeologically well-known for its majestic Toranas of the Solanki period. James Burgess (1903) of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) was the first to talk about the antiquarian remains of this country. In 1953 S.R. Rao of the ASI reported the occurrence of “Red Polished Ware” from the cemetery area near the town.

Vadnagar was excavated two times before the current excavations were started by the Branch. In 1953 B.Subba Rao and R. Mehta undertook excavations in Vadnagar while Y.S. Rawat of State Archaeology, Government of Gujarat excavated the site from 2006-2010.
